Dealing with Disappointment

When loss and disappointments come, regardless of their magnitude, we are forced to choose how we will respond.  The difficulty of that choice is compounded by the flood of emotions that always accompanies our experience of loss or disappointment.  Emotions are a tough beast to wrangle.  Often, the presence of emotion means the absence of objectivity and the ability to reason well.  Our brains kick in to full-on survival mode, fighting vehemently against the pain we are feeling in the moment.  The complexity of the human makeup is truly amazing, a testament to the creative genius of God, our creator.  Our response in the face of loss and disappointment will take one of two avenues.  Either we will choose to stuff the pain deep inside, temporarily suppressing the emotion we are naturally feeling, or we will face the pain head-on, navigating the difficult waters of the present painful circumstance toward the promise of real healing.  The good news is that the power and the courage to face pain head-on, to truly grieve our loss or disappointment, is not sourced in us.  Our strength does not need to be mustered from within.  Rather, Jesus is our source of strength, courage, hope and healing….
